Some people seem to have an innate need to take care of things. As best as I can tell, the I-need-to-take-care-of-things fairy didn’t get much dust on me when I was born. Don’t get me wrong. I care about people and like to help, but I like to see progress and to build things. That may be what drew me into university teaching … I enjoy watching students grow as they progress through computer science courses.

Bethany and Comet

For quite some time my daughter has expressed a strong and persistent desire to own a dog. Of course, I had lots of reasons why we didn’t “need” a dog. “We travel too much.” “Dogs are expensive.” “Dogs poop.” “Dogs need attention.”   My daughter had her own reasons for wanting a dog: “I want one.” “Dogs are cute.” “I want one.” “You can’t pet fish.” “I want one.” “I’ll take care of it.”

So, the battle was set: The well-conceived, calculating logic of a discerning father pitted against the beautiful brown eyes of my 11 year old daughter. Well … we just got a dog as Bethany’s Christmas present!

Bethany and Comet

Comet is a 2 year old Bichon who has yet to hit his growth spurt! If you’re not familiar with this breed of dog then you might enjoy the Wikipedia article. Suffice it to say they are white, fluffy, small, and incredibly soft!  Here are some clips of Bethany and Comet in the first 24 hours.
